Teacher gets half-million-dollar settlement after being forced out of school system

A teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public school system has received a $500,000 settlement after he says he was forced out of the school system for complaining about its discipline policies.

The teacher, Aaron Benner, had originally criticized the school system for its purported policy of not disciplining black students. The school allegedly offered bonuses to principals who reduced their schools’ suspension rates, an incentive that reportedly led to disruptive students remaining in the classroom.

Benner filed his lawsuit two years ago. He said he was investigated four times by the school system after complaining.
