Senate Republicans warn Dems of political backlash over impeachment inquiry

Arguing that there are no grounds for impeachment, Senate Republicans are warning Democrats that they’re going to face significant backlash from voters if they move ahead with impeachment proceedings, as Nancy Pelosi promised yesterday they would do.

Here are some choice comments from Republican senators:

  • “If you want to impeach him, stop talking. Do it. Do it. Go to Amazon, buy a spine and do it. And let’s get after it.” —John Kennedy (La.)
  • “I think the Democrats have made this such a partisan exercise that I think most of the public has discounted the idea of it, because I think most believe that it’s become sort of a political attack on the president and nothing more.” — Rand Paul (Ky.)
  • “I just can’t imagine a universe in which Democrats are stupid enough [proceed with impeachment]. I can’t imagine a universe in which that would happen because Nancy Pelosi is simply too shrewd to allow things to get out of control.” —John Cornyn (Texas)
  • “It’s a risky strategy on their part. I know they’re under a lot of pressure to do it, but if you’re the leadership over there, you got to think long and hard about what the implications are if it looks like you’re overreaching.” —John Thune (S.D.)

🔦 President Trump will be releasing the transcript from his controversial phone call with the leader of Ukraine today. Allegations that he attempted to bully the foreign leader into investigating Biden-family business dealings on that call were the catalyst that set off the chain of events leading to Pelosi’s impeachment announcement yesterday evening.
