The commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the U.S.-allied Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, told a senior American diplomat, “You are leaving us to be slaughtered,” CNN reports, citing “an internal U.S. government readout that has been obtained exclusively” by the network.
“You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered,” Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi told the Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, William Roebuck, in a meeting Thursday, according to the report. Mazloum also demanded to know whether America was going to do anything to protect Kurds in Syria as Turkey continues to advance into the country — and if not, he insisted on permission to make a deal with Russia to protect his people.
“You are not willing to protect the people, but you do not want another force to come and protect us. You have sold us. This is immoral,” Mazloum added. “I need to know if you are capable of protecting my people, of stopping these bombs falling on us or not. I need to know, because if you are not, I need to make a deal with Russia and the regime now and invite their planes to protect this region.”
🔦 President Trump has incurred domestic and international outrage for his surprise decision to pull all U.S. troops out of northeast Syria in advance of Turkey’s invasion of the area. The Syrian Kurds are longtime U.S. allies who were instrumental in America defeating ISIS in the region.
