A pumpkin tipping the scales at more than 2,000 pounds set a state record in California and took home the top spot in a recent grower’s competition.
The massive gourd, grown by hobbyist Leonardo Urena, clocked in at 2,175 pounds at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh off in Half Moon, California. Urena has been growing pumpkins since 2000 and claims he talks to them, encouraging them to continue growing.
The winner took home a $15,000 prize. Urena’s pumpkin, which is the largest in California history, is topped only by a 2017 entry from Washington state that weighed 2,400 pounds.
