The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists announced on Sunday that it had obtained a trove of leaked documents revealing the interior conditions of China’s infamous mass detention reeducation camps.
The documents present a blueprint for how the Chinese government runs the camps, including Bejing’s use of mass surveillance and “predictive policing,” the latter of which it accomplishes using artificial intelligence algorithms. The camps are reportedly large enough to hold more than a million people.
The Chinese government slammed the reports as “fake news,” calling the camps “vocational education and training centres…for the prevention of terrorism.”
